Why Just Dance 2018 is the game you didn’t know you need

I picked up Just Dance 2018 for the Switch on sale the other day. This isn’t my normal kind of game (I’m normally into strategy and RPG games) but I had family coming into town and we needed a game to play.

The results were… unexpected to say the least.

I only have 2 Switch controllers, but that’s never been a problem. Fortunately almost every game on the Switch allows you to use each half of the controller by itself, Just Dance was no exception.

Installing the game and download+install for an OS update took less than  4 minutes and we were up and running.

The instructions for the game were basically “Hold the controller in your right hand, don’t hit people with it.”

As I perused over the list of pop songs and hits, my expectations were pretty low; I was pleasantly surprised.

The Results

We soon had 4 introverted members of the family (myself included) up and “dancing” to silly songs from “Beep, beep I’m a sheep” to ABBA , Queen, and Lady Gaga.

Everyone was moving, the energy was fantastic!

It got people to open up and all the boredom was sucked out of the air like a vacuum.

Even the people watching were having fun: cheering, laughing, and jeering.

We worked up a sweat while we laughed and joked and danced. I’ve never seen a game change the atmosphere of a room so quickly and so completely.

It has other benefits too: I picked the “Sexy and I Know It” song, thinking it would be a quick, easy dance. I was horribly, horribly wrong!

It was a workout! 4 of us, none of us with any actual dancing ability, flailing about wildly, struggling to keep up with the furious pace of the digital dancer, falling farther behind with each pelvic thrust!

This was about the 8th song of the night and my muscles were starting to feel it; I decided that it was a good time to pass the controller off and enjoy watching other, less exhausted people play.

At the end of the night, everyone was in a good mood, talkative, and the energy in the room was phenomenal.

I still love RPG and strategy games most of all, but I’ve never seen a game transform into “insta-party” before; I can’t recommend it enough. Thanks to Nintendo’s 2 controllers for the price of 1 design philosophy, it’s cheap and get at least 4 people into the game at once (though the game does also support using cellphones, I did not test this mode of play).

The bottom line is this: if you need to suck the boredom out of a room of introverts or mildly awkward social gather, put in Just Dance 2018 and you’ll be having a blast in no time!
